The United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 740 have unveiled a memorial in Mount Pearl, honouring past union members who have since died.
Gerard Daley is now retired, but is a past President of United Association Local 740.
Daley smiles, looking over the names on the monument on Sagona Avenue in Mount Pearl. He says these names include the union’s founding members, many of whom he worked with, and were his friends.
Men that Daley says led the union through negotiations to improve wages and working conditions, and spearheaded the movement toward a pension plan for workers.
Daley was just one of dozens of family members who turned out today for the unveiling of the monument. 261 names of deceased members have been engraved with space left for future names to be added.
These are not individuals who have died on the job, rather all past union members who have passed away. The monument was built and paid for by current unionized members.
