Eight million dollars today from the Atlantic Fisheries Fund will support harvesting and processing sectors in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Fisheries Minister Jonathan Wilkinson joined Premier Dwight Ball this morning at the Marine Institute for the announcement.
The funding will support 59 projects that will work to modernize harvesting technologies, improve the quality of landings, and increase productivity and sustainability of operations.
Money will support 48 projects in the harvesting sector, seven on the processing side, and four Indigenous communities. The funding comes from the Atlantic Fisheries Fund, jointing funding by Federal government and provincial governments.
Among those who will benefit: the FFAW in St. John’s will receive over $270,000 for cod quality improvements, $1.6-million for the Fogo Island Cooperative for processing machinery, $450,000 for the Eastern Fish Markets in Carmanville will go toward a multi-species live holding facility, and North of Fifty Thirty Association in River of Ponds will benefit from $1.3-million for handling and harvesting technologies for Northern Pen fishers.
