A family in Portugal Cove-St. Philips taking on the English School District in a Formal Human Rights Hearing with the education of their son, and many others, hanging in the balance.
Todd Churchill (also founder of Reason for the Rink) has frequently spoken out about the lack of resources available for his son Carter, who is deaf and speaks American Sign Language. The family has been in mediation over the issue with the school district since filing a human rights complain in 2017, but with little movement.
Last Friday they terminated the process and chose to proceed to a formal hearing.
Just weeks away from the start of a new school year, Carter doesn’t even have a teacher who can speak to him.
Churchill says they’ve launched a Gofundme page to support their case, because the issue is bigger than just Carter.
He says this is about all the future Carter Churchills to come, and anyone is being refused access to education. If they can get such discrimination documented, he says it will make it easier for future children to receive an education.
