The Gathering Place is marking 25 years in operation, but the executive director says that’s not necessarily a cause to celebrate.
The Gathering Place was first established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1994 to provide programs and services to marginalized members of society.
The need for the services has grown steadily over the years – to the point where they’ve needed to open their doors seven days a week, with extended hours to keep up with the demand.
Executive Director Joanne Thompson, says while she is very proud of the work they do, the fact that they are still needed in the community represents a bigger problem. She says it shows that too many people are still falling through cracks in the system.
The Gathering Place is holding a garden party tomorrow from 2:00-4:00 p.m. to offer thanks to those who have supported the cause.
