Several government departments are involved after concerns were raised about the disposal of drill mud at a site off the Trans-Canada and Peacekeeper’s Way.
Concerns were raised by a man who discovered what appeared to be oil and antifreeze coming from the side of a dirt bank in a quarry area off the TCH. He climbed the embankment to investigate and discovered a large amount of oily mud.
The Department of Natural Resources is reviewing the operation conditions of the quarry involved and is following up with the company.
The departments of Environment and Service NL are also involved and aware of the issue.
A statement provided by Natural Resources Minister Siobhan Coady indicates that all quarries must be operated in compliance with the Quarry Materials Act and other legislation.
