Whether the scandal involving Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s handling of the SNC-Lavalin affair has any impact on him politically, remains to be seen.
The federal ethics commissioner has found that Trudeau was in violation of Conflict of Interest laws when he attempted to influence former attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould to halt the criminal prosecution of the Quebec-based company.
She subsequently resigned as justice minister and now sits independently after being removed from the Liberal caucus.
Memorial University political scientist Kelly Blidook says it’s hard to say if the matter will resonate with voters come October. But there’s little doubt that it provides the opposition parties with an opportunity to go after Trudeau.
Both WIlson-Raybould and her staunch ally, former Health Minister Jane Philpott, are running independently this time around.
