The votes are in, and American TV host Jimmy Kimmel has been elected as ‘honourary’ Dildo mayor.
After a week-long campaign that reached its climax last night, Dildo local service district committee member Andrew Pretty revealed the results on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
However, the role is based on a few conditions. Pretty says Kimmel will have to come to Newfoundland and get screeched in to officially accept the role. No date is yet set for a visit.
As for his duties, Kimmel says he will be strong but fair, as long as he doesn’t have to do anything in an official capacity.
Kimmel’s sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez took charge this week in the town, getting screeched in and making sure that unwitting rival, Matt Damon, didn’t edge Kimmel for the win.
Guillermo says he was taught the phrase, “Long may your big jib draw,” which he said he believes means, “May your sail go free in the wind.”
To wrap up the screech-in, Guillermo kissed a cod live on TV and cleansed his palette with a taste of Newfoundland Screech.
Dildo Unveils Massive Sign
After an exhausting yet rewarding week for the residents of Dildo, the town unveiled a gift from their sister city.
The side of the hill in Dildo holds a sign just like the one in Hollywood, except theirs is only five letters: D-I-L-D-O.
Andrew Pretty, a member of the local service district, says he had a hand in the idea.
He says when it started, he mocked up a sketch of DILDO on a hill and sent it to the producer. He was surprised when the group said they were going to cover the costs.
Ball Upholds Dildo Deal
Meanwhile, Premier Dwight Ball is holding up his end of the deal by visiting the community of Dildo.
Premier Ball says everyone in the town is excited for what has been happening. He believes this is just the beginning for the community.
He says people he has spoken to are getting messages from around the world about the goings-on. He believes Dildo is a great place to start a foundation on the Baccalieu Trail.
An image of Ball creating a ‘heart’ around the new Dildo sign was featured on his Instagram account last night.
Hype Experienced Before, but Not to This Level
This is not the first time there has been hype around the town’s name, says a local business owner.
Todd Warren, owner of George House Heritage Bed and Breakfast, says there have been highs for the town that quickly died down but he does not believe this is one of those times.
Warren believes this is the foundation for many years of good tourism for their town. He says this is like something people would dream of.
