Supporters of protests rocking Hong Kong gathered at Memorial University this week, albeit on a much smaller scale.
At issue is an extradition bill that will allow Hong Kong residents to be extradited to places like mainland China and Taiwan. That has residents fearful that Hong Kong could be losing its autonomy.
Protests have been ramping up since the spring, with hundreds of thousands taking to the streets and clashing with police.
Members of MUN’s Hong Kong Society were not surprised by the small turn out for an event held at the University Centre this week.
Adrian Ng , helped organize the Stand with Hong Kong event. He says it is hard for people to understand the weight of what is happening on the other side of the world. He provided attendees with some backgound on the events as they have been unfolding.
Ng, who is from Hong Kong, says he wishes Newfoundlanders and Labradorians had a better understanding about what is going on.
The group is getting ready to plan more events to raise public awareness of the issue.
