Production on the Hibernia platform was shut down again on the weekend after another oil spill in the offshore—only a day after production had resumed following a spill in July.
The most recent spill is the third in the offshore in less than a year. Officials say the oil was released into the ocean during a power outage Saturday.
Vessels using mechanical dispersion and a side sweep system were on site of the platform. Wildlife observers were also on site.
Aerial surveillance of the area on Sunday morning estimated the size of the slick to be about four nautical miles by one nautical mile. Estimates are that it contains approximately 2,200 litres of oil.
HMDC says a sudden influx of excess water on the platform caused the waste containment drain system to overflow. That caused a quantity of oil in the drain to spill into the ocean.
Just last month, another spill from the Hibernia Platform released 12,000 litres of oil into the ocean.
