The province’s largest school district is rolling out a campaign to teach drivers about school bus safety.
It is particularly concerned about those who go past the bus even though the arm is extended and lights are flashing.
Drivers from all directions must stop, and it makes no difference how many lanes the road encompasses.
Tony Stack, the director of education with the English School District, says they want people to pay attention and think about what they are doing in school zones and around school buses.
Classes resume next week. There are more than 45,000 students on over 900 bus routes in the province.
Stack says there is a disturbing trend which sees people ignoring the bus signals. For example, they had numerous complaints of such driver activity from Conception Bay South last school year.
The fine for illegally passing a school bus can be up to $1,200 plus six demerit points.
