Michael Buist, a man known by many for his impact on local baseball, has died.
Buist passed on Sunday at the Health Sciences Centre after a brief battle with cancer. He was 72 years old.
Buist signed a pro baseball contract at the age of 16, launching himself into a career that would take him from baseball to politics and back.
Among his many roles, he taught high school in Hamilton, was a statistician for the Blue Jays, founded Destination St. John’s, and acted as Assistant Deputy Minister of Tourism. Most recently, Buist sat as Executive Director for St. John’s Minor Baseball.
A mass will be held at the Basilica on Thursday morning, at 9:30. Attendees are welcomed to wear their favourite baseball shirt or jersey.
