The mother of a young woman who died at the Clarenville Correctional Centre last year says legal action against the province is the next step to finding out what really happened to her daughter.
Natasha Martin has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the province for the the death of her daughter, Skye Martin, while in custody in April 2018.
Martin says she received a lot of information about what happened from retired superintendent Marlene Jesso, but says she still has a lot of unanswered questions.
She wants to know what happened at the prison on the Wednesday and Thursday preceding her daughter’s death, and she also has questions regarding her daughter’s medication. She wants to know why someone has the authority to change the medication prescribed by another doctor. She says Skye had no psychiatric medications in her system when she died, despite being on a list of them.
Martin says she hopes she can create some change in our justice system.
She says she knows what went wrong and the system is broken. She says she wants to be a voice to help promote change for inmates suffering with mental health and addictions issues.
