The federal minister of fisheries says the recent establishment of a task force to review science on seals shows that he is listening to concerns about the number of seals in our waters.
However, the FFAW-Unifor says more needs to be done because seals are decimating our fish stocks.
Estimations put the number of seals in Atlantic Canada at 8-million. Grey seals eat mostly groundfish, including cod, while harp seals are more likely to prey on forage fish such as capelin, a food source for cod.
FFAW President Keith Sullivan says more can be done to promote the industry and find new markets for seals. Many traditional markets have dried up with bans on seal products.
