Two sisters in Portugal Cove-St Phillip’s went above and beyond after a fire at a seniors home over the weekend.
Wanda O’Reilly and Yvonne Sampson are co-owners of Murphy’s Personal Care Home, which houses 13 seniors. A small electrical fire in the basement Saturday night forced the evacuation of residents.
That’s when the sisters stepped in, opened their doors to displaced seniors. Eight of the residents stayed at Wanda’s house and the other five stayed at her sister’s place for the night.
O’Reilly says the residents appeared to be having a grand old time, and she was the only one stressed.
She says her adrenaline was pumping and she shed a few tears. That’s when one of the residents told her to take a breath, and gave her a hug.
The residents of the home are like family, she says, and she and her sister are just happy that everyone is okay.
Residents were able to return to the home early Sunday afternoon.
