Newfoundland and Labrador is once again on top of the men’s fastpitch world in Canada.
The Galway Hitmen bashed their way through the regular round robin to a double life in the playoffs, but had to win their last three games after a championship round loss.
The Hitmen defended their title with a 10-7 win over the British Columbia Loggers at the tournament, which was held in Grande Prairie, Alta. They played three consecutive games on Sunday, including the finale.
It’s Newfoundland and Labrador’s seventh national men’s fastpitch title.
Colin Walsh, who batted .500, says they have a group of guys who will do anything for each other and this time, they had to rely on players who might not normally be in the starting lineup. He told VOCM Morning Show host Fred Hutton that they had some injuries which leaves a situation where you have to have everybody pulling on the same rope.
Kyle Ezekiel, who was also on the VOCM Morning Show with Fred Hutton, says there is talk of having the tournament on Newfoundland soil next year.
He says this championship seemed different from the others because they were dominant in many of their games.
