The last long weekend of the summer was a beautiful one right across the island, with record-breaking temperatures in a number of areas.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Jody Boyd says temperature records were broken in five areas of the island – Gander, Badger, La Scie, Bonavista and Twillingate.
The maximum temperature in Gander on Saturday was 26.8 degrees Celsius, breaking the previous record of 26.6 set in 1981 for the highest temperature on August 31st.
St. John’s peaked at 25.3 degrees.
While August month was the third driest on record for Gander with just 36.8 millimeters of rain, and 2018 the fifth driest, meteorologist Jody Boyd cautions against drawing any conclusions about what that means.
Boyd says even the north coast of Labrador, which has suffered through a cool, miserable summer for the most part, saw warm temperatures. He says Nain broke a temperature record which is good news as there hasn’t been much of a summer in northern Labrador.
The sunshine will continue today as Boyd says it’s shaping up to be a beautiful Labour Day holiday.
He says temperatures will be up around 20 degrees again, so a nice start to September as well.
