Bianca Andreescu’s historic win is inspiring a younger generation of tennis players and fans.
Andreescu was the first Canadian to win the Grand Slam title after the 19-year-old defeated 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in the women’s singles final.
Jasmine Rahman, a 15-year-old student at St. Bonaventure’s in St. John’s has been playing tennis competitively since she was 8 years old.
Even though Andreescu was relatively unknown until recently, Rahman says she has been following her for a while.
She says it’s so motivating seeing what she’s done, how much she has overcome and just to see how she got where she did. Rahman says she thinks Andreescu has a lot of determination and if something isn’t working, she isn’t afraid to switch things up. That’s a big part of what Rahman is trying to do incorporate into her own game and seeing Andreescu do that is really inspiring.
Rahman says even her friends who don’t follow tennis are talking about Andreescu. She was she was actually really surprised; a lot of people watched the final and got behind Bianca.
Rahman says she trains 5 days a week and her goal is for a NCAA Tennis scholarship to the States.
