The Marine Institute says they recorded some monstrous waves off of the province’s west coast this weekend as Dorian pummeled the area.
A wave of just over 30 meters, or 100 feet was recorded over the weekend near Port aux Basques during the storm.
Bill Carter, director of the Centre for Applied Ocean Technology, says that wasn’t the only colossal wave they recorded that day.
Another five or six waves were recorded at over 25 meters as well.
Carter says while the 100 foot wave was very unique, it is not uncommon to see large waves off our coasts, especially during the winter months.
He says it is amazing to see the activity off our shores in the winter time. He says there is a lot more activity for extended periods during that time.
