The family of a well known RCMP officer are building a permanent memorial for him in Tors Cove as part of their healing process following his death by suicide.
Today marks the two year anniversary of the death of RCMP Corporal Trevor O’Keefe. The officer’s passing sparked public dialogue about suicide prevention and inspired a number of initiatives including the Walk A Mile in His Shoes event taking place at three locations this Saturday, September 14th.
Trevor’s parents, Biddy and Pierre O’Keefe, recently opened up about a project the began just weeks following Corporal O’Keefe’s sudden death; building a structure at a lookout area – one of Trevor’s favourite places.
They are calling it a place of solace, which they plan to name Sláinte: the Gaelic word for good health. The spoke about it with VOCM’s Gerri Lynn Mackey,
Pierre O’Keefe says he and Biddy weren’t going to let the weight of losing their son get the better of them and he believes focusing on a memorial project in honour of Trevor has helped them cope over the past two years.
Pierre expects to conclude work on their labour of love sometime next year.
