An online petition has been launched to have direct flights between Newfoundland and Labrador and Ireland reinstated.
Niamh Redmond, the woman behind the petition, was born in Ireland, and is now living in St. John’s.
She says not having the direct flight, which was discontinued last year, has put a lot of people at a disadvantage. She says there has been a group of people on social media talking about doing something, but nothing ever happened.
She decided she had to be the one to kickstart something.
She got tired of all the talk and no action and decided to put the petition online and see what happens. In just four days the petition received almost 400 signatures.
She says there are so many benefits of having the flights. It is big for the tourism industry and for business connections.
And then there is the historical aspect of it.
She says there are a lot of ties that bind the two islands, and it is important to keep those cultural and historical connections alive.
