Lawyer Bob Buckingham anticipates that more lawsuits could follow after he filed a statement of claim against the provincial government in the death of Douglas Neary at HMP in August of 2017.
It’s the second lawsuit against government in connection with the deaths of four inmates in separate circumstances in the correctional system – all of which were the subject of an independent review.
Buckingham says he is familiar with the lawsuit involving the family of Skye Martin who died following an incident at the Correctional Centre for Women in Clarenville in April of 2018, and he expects more lawsuits are coming.
He says working in conjunction with each other, they intend to “expose the antiquated, almost neo-medieval system and mentality” behind the province’s correctional facilities. He calls HMP more of a penal facility than a correctional facility.
