If the explosion didn’t wake up the residents of Franklyn Avenue, emergency services did.
St. John’s Regional Fire Department acting platoon chief Gina Burke says at 3:00 this morning they received multiple reports of an explosion in the area of Prince of Wales Street and Franklyn Avenue.
She believes the source of the explosion was various cans in a shed igniting during a fire.
Burke adds that crews needed to traverse through narrow lanes between houses to gain access to the fire, but had the blaze extinguished in minutes.
Newfoundland Power was called to the scene to assess the damage to overhead wires in the area, but Burke says the damage was primarily limited to melted siding on adjacent houses.
Residents of the area were notified of the ongoing situation but no houses were evacuated at the time.
Burke did not say if the fire was suspicious in nature, but emergency crews believe they have identified the source of the fire as a nearby BBQ.
