Over a dozen protesters gathered outside the constituency office of Lake Melville MHA Perry Trimper today, calling for his complete resignation.
Signs were posted on the office and held in the hands of demonstrators with phrases like “No room for racism,” and “I stand with the Innu Nation,” as they called for Trimper to resign immediately.
Organizers say Trimper’s apology and decision to step down as cabinet minister last week were not enough, in light of comments he made when his phone failed to disconnect from a voicemail to Dominic Rich of the Innu Nation.
A conversation between Trimper and an unnamed woman was recorded with critical comments about the Innu, which many have accused of being racist.
On Thursday evening the recording was made public by the Innu Nation, who expressed shock at the comments made by the then-minister.
Trimper resigned from cabinet the following day, just one week after being sworn-in as Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment. He remains within the Liberal caucus as MHA for the district of Lake Melville.
