Survivors of sexual assault now have a new option for reporting it.
The Journey Project was officially launched yesterday where the pilot project allows people to report sexual assault anonymously through a third party community-based organization.
Nicole Kieley, the Executive Director of the NL Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre, says reporting a sexual assault can prove very daunting. She says the thought of reporting can sometimes be the hardest thing for some to consider.
RNC Chief Joe Boland says the program was one used by RCMP in the Yukon, and raised by former RCMP Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke in meetings of the Violence Against Women and Girls Committee.
Kieley says the pilot project allows survivors to control what happens next whether that’s a week or year down the line.
