Hundreds filled the streets of St. John’s Friday night to “Take Back The Night” and raise awareness of issues relating to gender inequality and sexual violence.
Organizer, Renee Sharpe, says the night acknowledges people’s right to “take up space,” whether that is in the day or night. She says it does not matter whether the space is taken up at work, in the streets or in relationships.
She says sometimes it takes a supportive community to acknowledge the fact that people do not deserve violence no matter how they choose to live their life.

The event is organized by NL Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre and Sharpe says the event has been taking place for over 30 years.
Sharpe says being seen and heard is important and it lets people know they are not alone. She says things will get better, especially with a community on your side.
The group started their march at Bannerman Park and ended in downtown St. John’s.
