Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he cannot be definitive about the number of times he’s worn black or brown face in the past.
He addressed reporters again yesterday, offering his apologies after three separate incidents came to light in which he work dark makeup to dress as another race.
Trudeau told reporters he cannot say for certain how many times he’s done that in the past speaking to reporters in Winnipeg. He says he did not understand at the time how hurtful it is to people who live with discrimination every day.
Children Are Going to See Their Prime Minister Mocking Them: Singh
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh told reporters yesterday he was “deeply troubled” by what this means to Canada.
He says children are going to see multiple images of their prime minister mocking their lived reality. That, he indicated, is hurtful to those who have faced injury in physical violence and words and those who have been unable to secure employment because of the colour of their skin.
Meanwhile, liberal Cabinet minister Siobhan Coady says politicians have to live up to what’s expected of them.
Coady says it’s a very difficult situation and believes Trudeau was sincere in his apology. She says the world is watching politicians all the time, and they have to live up to a higher standard.
