Better engagement with affected communities, education, and diverse representation in public services are among the recommendations made in a report released today from Addressing Islamophobia in NL.
Today’s community report follows two years of engagement and outreach done by the project, including a conference held at MUN in St. John’s last year.
The recommendations include education for public employees, police and health care workers, more engagement with affected Indigenous, Muslim, Jewish and other racialized communities, and increased diversity among employees.
As well, school education programs about racism and a specific action plan from the province to address diversity and institutionalized racism are called for, to be implemented by January, 2021. This follows a similar agreement between the province and the Innu Nation to address institutionalized racism.
The recommendations are based on collaboration with over 300 people in 40 different communities around the province.
