Unionized electrical workers in the province thought their union would have millions of dollars in the bank. Instead, they’re struggling to pay the bills.
Local 2330 of the international Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is in financial shambles after some unusual goings-on. The union was placed in trusteeship by the international a few months ago.
James Martin, a former treasurer with the union, says they knew for a while that something was out of whack. He told VOCM Morning Show co-host Gerri Lynn Mackey that they should have been in much better shape after major projects such as Muskrat Falls and Bull Arm.
He says outside of regular payroll, there was $2-million in cheques for per diems and other items.
Ken White, who is retired, is there to oversee the executive as the union tries to get back on track.
He says they have about 1,500 to 2,000 members paying between $4,000 and $7,000 each year, so they should be in better shape.
