The province’s fisheries minister has announced new aquaculture polices and procedures including updated policies that he says will set the stage for effectively managing the growing industry.
Gerry Byrne made the announcement this morning at Cold Harvest 2019 days after a sudden fish die off at a Northern Harvest operation on the south coast, was revealed by the FFAW.
The regulations have been in the works for more than a year.
Updates include policies that focus on industry accountability, environmental stewardship and best practices to meet or exceed industry standards.

It also includes a strong public reporting policy to improve accountability and public trust in the industry.

Detailed fish health management plans will also be required, including net washing, and finfish and shellfish surveillance measures, as well as biosecurity auditing.
