The Opposition critic for Natural Resources says the cost of energy is getting too high and Newfoundlanders and Labradorians need some relief.
David Brazil is looking for government action now that the PUB has granted NL Hydro a 6.4 per cent increase in electricity rates on the island as of October 1.
Brazil says Seniors Advocate Dr. Suzanne Brake indicated that seniors, especially those on low incomes, are worried about the increasing cost of electricity – even before Muskrat Falls comes online.
Brazil says the provincial government indicated they had a plan to prevent electricity rate increases, and that Ottawa was kicking in $200-million, but so far, there’s no concrete commitment. He’s hoping mitigation will be announced. The nearly 7 per cent increase will be substantial with little time for people to prepare.
