At least two people will be staying on Little Bay Islands while the rest of the residents resettle to other locations.
Mike Parsons, his wife Georgina and the family dog are staying in the soon-to-be-deserted community even though government services will be cut off at the end of this year.
Parsons says that after twenty years in Ontario, he wanted to return home for his retirement. He explains that things were different when he was young.
He says it was a busy place. They would finish school and start work the next day at the fish plant and then go back to school in September.
Parsons says they are preparing themselves the best they can, and they have gone off the grid already.
He says there are lots of reasons for the island to be resettled but despite those things there is something beautiful about it and for them it’s a journey they’re looking forward to it.
Parsons says that $250,000- $275,000 is more money then most people there have ever seen and community members are excited about that, but watching everyone pack up is heartbreaking.
The Parsons are documenting the resettlement on Facebook.
