The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Eastern Newfoundland says he always knew the fight for marriage equality in the Church would have to be done at the local level.
Reverend Dr. Geoffrey Peddle is one of 127 delegates who voted in favour of marriage equality at NL Synod 2019 over the weekend.
Peddle says he doubted if there would be enough support to pass the motion nationally, which is why he decided to call the weekend Synod so they could make the decision locally.
The Diocese of Western Newfoundland had already voted in favor of marriage equality in early September, with 94 per cent in favour.
Peddle says he hopes the decisions will inspire other jurisdictions to follow suit, not just in the Anglican church, but in all of Christianity.
He hopes others will pay attention to what they have accomplished.
