The historic crypts of the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist will be the scene of a heist this week as part of a special fundraiser.
‘Caper in the Crypts’ pits teams against the clock as they work together to solve a series of puzzles. It’s developed by local escape room company ‘Escape Quest.’
Derek Sullivan of the Anglican Cathedral says their partnership with Escape Quest has been over a year in the works.
Sullivan says the Escape Quest team drew inspiration from the history and artwork present in the cathedral in order to theme the series of puzzles and weave a story around the event. Players take the role of thieves looking to procure ‘ancient treasure’ from the cathedral’s crypts for a wealthy, anonymous collector.
“The Caper of the Century! You and your colleagues are an elite team of professional thieves, and you’ve just managed to disengage the alarm of the Cathedral. But it won’t be down for long, and the Crypt is maze like and well secured. You’ve got to work fast! Can you pull off a Caper in the Crypt, or will you be moving to the big house?”

While it won’t give you actual tips on how to break into the church, he says it’s a great opportunity to experience the historic cathedral in a new light.
Funds raised by the event will support community outreach and programming offered by the Anglican Cathedral.
The caper continues until Saturday, October 5. Spaces are limited.
