The leader of the NDP is calling for a full review and greater transparency surrounding a proposed garbage incineration plant for the Lewisporte area.
Synergy World Power is proposing to ship in plastics from Europe to burn at a facility in Lewisporte in a process called “gasification.”
Allison Coffin says the company has made previous efforts to start similar projects in other areas, none of which have come to fruition.
She says similar facilities have been rejected in Ireland, Scotland and Las Vegas.
Coffin says Newfoundland and Labrador cannot become a pollution haven for the world’s garbage. She wants to know why the projects have either failed or been rejected in other countries and she’s calling on the provincial government to consider other development options for Lewisporte.
