Today, on National Seniors Day, five people were recognized by the provincial government in the 2019 Seniors of Distinction awards.
The annual ceremony celebrates the achievements of Newfoundland and Labrador’s older population.
Through a list of 19 nominations for this year’s awards, five individuals were chosen:
- Lorraine Best of Paradise
- Annie Brennan of Marystown
- Noreen Careen of Labrador City
- Olga Kinden of Green Island Cove
- John W. McGrath of St. John’s.
The Seniors’ Advocate says while National Seniors Day is cause for celebration, it’s also a time to shed light on serious issues that seniors face.
Dr. Suzanne Brake recently released a report highlighting concerns she has about the challenges seniors must contend with in this province, titled ‘Long May Your Big Jib Draw — Setting Sail.’
Brake congratulates each winner on their award, saying the celebration also pays tribute to the thousands of seniors across the province.
