The City of St. John’s has approved a tender to expand a fence around the Robin Hood Bay landfill site after advocates demanded action due to the state of the popular Sugarloaf Path. However, advocates say it’s not enough.
Images of garbage scattered about and littering the hiking trail have been shared on social media.
Friends of the Sugarloaf Patch wrote council demanding that the city take action.
Member Sherwin Flight told VOCM Morning Show co-host Gerri Lynn Mackey there’s very little currently in place to contain the garbage from spreading to the surrounding landscape.
He says it’s gathering in surrounding trees and making its way to the Atlantic Ocean through Skerries Brook.
Flight says it’s shocking to see, and last night’s resolution is not in response to the letter they wrote. He says it actually came from a tender awarded a few months back and won’t be enough to solve the problem there.
The group has set a petition calling for the city to address their concerns.
