Conservation officers are tracking the movements of a wolf near Happy Valley-Goose Bay after a dog was killed near the town.
Officials confirm a wolf has been moving near backyards and trails over the past several days. They believe there is only one such animal in the area.
Officers found the remains of a dog over the weekend, consistent with a wolf kill. Pet owners are advised to keep their animals indoors or in confined areas as wolves are known to sometimes attack small or medium-sized pets.
Warning signs have been posted through the town, and residents are advised to avoid identified areas. Some of the wolf’s travel routes have been identified, and efforts have been focused around them.
While wolf shooting season does not open until October 15, the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources says it is illegal to fire a gun within 1,000 metres of a school, playground or athletic field, or 300 metres of a dwelling.
The department says wild animals that are habituated to human food sources—such as garbage—can lose their caution around people, increasing possible safety risks. It urges people to take steps to avoid attracting wildlife, including by properly storing garbage.
If you encounter a wolf, never crowd the animal. If it approaches, be loud and aggressive—wave your arms and shout. Do not run, but instead back away slowly.
Further sightings should be reported to the North West River Forestry and Wildlife district office at 709-897-8479 or after-hours at 709-897-7116.
