A long-standing dispute may soon be at an end as the province has unveiled new policy surrounding waste collection on unserviced roads in unincorporated areas.

Early this year, a consultant was hired on to conduct a review of the provincial waste management strategy. Controversy arose over waste collection fees expected to be paid by the owners of seasonal properties on unserviced roads in unincorporated areas. In February, then-minister Graham Letto ordered the Eastern Regional Service Board to cease all collection in such areas until the review could be completed.

After months of discussions, the Department of Municipal Affairs announced the approach agreed upon by both parties.

As of year’s end, a number of unserviced roads will automatically have their waste collection services halted. Residents of these areas will have a chance to opt back in if they desire.

As long as at least 70 per cent of property owners indicate they want the service to continue—with its associated fees—it will be reinstated. If that occurs, all property owners will be expected to assume the yearly fee.

Meanwhile, the ERSB will continue collecting waste collection in unincorporated areas that are serviced by a level of government.

Waste services will end on December 31st in the following areas:

• Brigus Junction and all side roads
• Cape Pond Road and all side roads
• English Hill Road including Old Highway (Carbonear area)
• Glen’s Cove
• Goulds Big Pond and Old Man’s Pond and all side roads
• Goulds Pond and all side roads
• Hell Hill Pond and all side roads
• Horse Chops and all side roads
• Lamanche and all side roads
• Line Road and Gunner’s Road and all side roads (Carbonear area)
• Mahers and all side roads
• Middle Gull Pond and all side roads
• Mobile First Pond and all side roads
• Ocean Pond, Hodgewater Pond and Leahy’s Road and all side roads
• Old Prison Camp Road and all side roads (off Salmonier Line)
• Peak Pond and Reid’s Pond and all side roads
• Placentia Junction and all side roads
• All side roads off Salmonier Line (excluding the LSD of Deer Park/Vineland Road)

• Burry Heights Road (and all side roads)
• Way Points Wilderness Road
