The first lumpfish will roll out of Marystown in 2021 from what will be Canada’s first lumpfish factory.
Paul Antle of Marbase, the new owners of the Marystown Shipyard, were in the town Thursday to cut the ribbon on the facility and to announce details of their plans to become a service hub for the aquaculture industry.
Lumpfish and conners feed on sea lice and clean them off the salmon, thereby the term “cleaner fish.”
Antle says the industry will need a wide range of services, and he expects to see people who have left for economic reasons to return home once aquaculture picks up steam.
While fish farming is not at the level of production of the wild fishery, it is a growing industry in this province.
He says the industry will need many services including vessel repair, feed, storage, barge construction, cage repair, etc.
