Hockey has always been the big sport on the Southern Shore and a local musician, and former hockey player, says it is worth being celebrated.
The Ferryland Flyers are celebrating 50 years this year.
Wilf Curran of the Masterless Men played with the Flyers as a junior and a senior. He says he was “brought up through the hockey system.”
He says many of his teammates have passed on but the memories they shared will last forever.
He says the rivalry between the community back then was unbelievable . Some of the teams were the Renews Royals, Ferryland Flyers, Cape Broyle Bombers and Calvert Comets.
Curran says the hockey was good and the games were rough. The players were enemies on Sunday nights and friends on Monday morning. He jokes and says they were alright after they were stitched up at St. Clare’s after the game.
Curran says they had good competition with community teams all along the Southern Shore including Bay Bulls.
A celebration of the team will take place at the Southern Shore Folk Arts Centre on October 26th.
Tickets for the dinner and dance can be purchased at Foodland in Ferryland.
