The Mayor of Grand Falls-Windsor is weighing in on a proposed liquid fuel production facility for Lewisporte.
UK-based Synergy World Energy is planning to develop a facility at the port in Lewisporte to turn plastics into energy.
It’s hoped that the fuel facility will supply power for a new data centre in Grand Falls-Windsor.
Mayor Barry Manuel says it has the potential to be of great benefit to the region, and he’s urging government officials to do their due diligence and ask questions, rather than dismiss it outright.
He says if the science or evidence proves it not to be a good project, then they can move on.
The NDP is less than enthusiastic however. Leader Alison Coffin has her own questions about what the project is all about.
She wants to know if they’re talking about importing garbage, or just recyclable plastics? Are they asking for tax breaks from the provincial government? And she wants to know it they are looking at a power purchase agreement, as Coffin says we already have enough power.
