Nalcor is confident that it will have the Labrador-Island Link (known as the LIL) operational next year but an oversight consulting firm finds the situation troublesome.
Consumer Advocate Dennis Browne first raised the issue on VOCM News a couple of weeks ago, saying that a software problem is preventing Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro from sending power from Labrador to the island. General Electric is the main contractor involved.
John Antonuk, the founder of Liberty Consulting, doesn’t share Hydro’s confidence. He says so many dates have come and gone that he now is uncertain of any timeline.
He says he is not being critical of management at Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro as they are doing their utmost to work with GE.
Rate mitigation hearings resume this morning with the Public Utilities Board’s other consultant, Synapse Energy. They are expected to call for variable pricing whereby power costs more during peak periods than off-peak times.
