Farewell, Beaumont!
The fan-favourite bird of prey featured on Newfoundland Power’s Osprey Nest Cam has departed for warmer pastures—another sure sign fall is settling in.
Each year Newfoundland Power sets up a live broadcast of an osprey nest near the Virginia Waters Substation as part of its nest management program.
Birds sometimes favour structures near power equipment due to their high vantage points, which can pose risks to both the animals as well as the electrical equipment. In those cases, crews will take action to trim nest material, or even relocate nests to special platforms.
This year, bird-lovers watched Beaumont woo another osprey named ‘Hope,’ parenting a clutch of eggs. The summer’s adventure continued as a hatchling grew up and learned to fly from its perch high above Snow’s Lane.
It followed a heartbreak of a year in 2018 when Beaumont lost his mate with too little time to settle again before the season’s end.
Newfoundland Power bid them a fond farewell as they departed Snow’s Lane to migrate somewhere warmer for the winter.
A fond farewell to our feathered friends, as Beaumont, Hope and their chick have now all left the nest at Snow’s Lane and begun their migration to warmer climes. It’s been an eventful summer on the Osprey #NESTCAM and we wish them safe travels. pic.twitter.com/AGdtUPwj4z
