The FFAW met with Northern Harvest officials in mid-September to address the concerns they were hearing from lobster harvesters in Fortune Bay. That was before the union made the massive die-off of farmed salmon in Fortune Bay public, but after the company reported the situation to the provincial government on September 3rd.
It’s since been revealed that 2.6 million farmed salmon died some time over the summer.
Union President Keith Sullivan says harvesters had been calling, seeking answers following the massive die-off of salmon from prolonged exposure to warm water temperatures over the summer.
Sullivan says he doesn’t know why the union was the one to finally expose the problem.
He says the main thing now is to clean up the mess, ensure minimal environmental impact, take care of workers, and put measures in place so that it never happens again.
