It was Newfoundland Power’s turn at the rate mitigation hearings at the Public Utilities Board today, and they’re calling for a sweeping review of the electricity system.
Government has said that it wants to keep rates within 13.5 cents kWh. However, NF Power says government will have $15-billion in assets which it will have to pay for one way or another.
After Muskrat, the province will be paying for three utilities so NF Power is asking government to consider some type of reorganization.

Interestingly, there was a lot of discussion about heat pumps.
Five years ago, only about 5,000 people had switched. Last year, 37,000 of NF Power’s customers had converted in an effort to save money. The utility will help with the finances for anyone who wishes to go with a heat pump but only 400 customers have taken NF Power up on the offer.

The hearings have adjourned until Thursday when industrial customers will make their pitch for rate mitigation in the post-Muskrat era.
