The FFAW has released its federal election questionnaire showing what it calls mixed commitments from the four major political parties on key issues affecting the fishing industry.
FFAW President Keith Sullivan says any party vying for votes must understand the importance of the inshore fishery to rural communities and the province as a whole.
He says three of the parties are “clearly committed to and understand” the important role a renewed groundfish fishery will play in the future of the inshore industry.
The Liberals, NDP and Greens all affirmed their support for the federal government’s commitment that the first 115,000 metric tonnes of northern cod be allocated to owner-operator fish harvesters and Indigenous groups.
The Liberals stopped short of committing to formalize a new groundfish integrated fisheries management plan according to the FFAW, while the Conservatives made no commitment.
