As of September’s end, the NLC says legal cannabis sales have exceeded $36-million—or 3,700 kg—in this province.
Fred Bergman of the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council says according to numbers from July, that number is in excess of $1-billion across Canada.
Bergman says the situation in Canada is mirroring that of some states in the US, where cannabis is legal.
He says some American markets saw double digit growth in the first few years after legalization, and they’re seeing that in Canada as well.
Bergman says cannabis sales between October and July of this year increased by over 150 per cent nationally and about 39 per cent in Newfoundland and Labrador.
That’s expected to increase by another third once edibles, extracts and topicals start becoming available on the market in mid-December.
