It took a tragic accident to accomplish what many believe was a measure which would save many lives.
Judy Lynn Ford was struck by a car and killed while crossing the Prince Philip Parkway on October 17, 1980. Her death immediately led to a week-long blockade by some 2,000 fellow Memorial University students demanding a better crossing system.
Ford, a 20-year-old student from Port aux basques, was living in Squires House in Paton College at the time.
Her death ultimately led to the construction of two pedways spanning the busy parkway.

(Pedways were constructed across Prince Philip Drive following protests by students. The pedways have since been torn down and replaced.)
Yesterday, Memorial University unveiled a storyboard in memory of Judy Lynn Ford, at the University Centre’s food court, which passes over Prince Philip Drive.
Judy’s father, Rodney Ford, says she was the perfect daughter.
He says she was outgoing, kind and considerate. Rodney says she was always pleasant and loved helping first-year students.
