The diagnosis of autism in a child is one that affects an entire family, which is why the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador places so much emphasis on family awareness and support.
Family and Community Support Officer with the Autism Society, Sarah White, says once a child is diagnosed there comes a flood of appointments and therapists that can be overwhelming for family members.
She says for parents the child is the same person they were before the diagnosis, but suddenly they’re dealing with speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, and even physical therapists.
The Autism Society host parent support groups in communities across the island. White says the best support for parents is other parents.
She says Newfoundland has some great family support groups who are very active.
The Autism Society also hosts sibling support groups to help the brothers or sisters of a child with ASD navigate all the changes in their lives.
It helps children learn more about ASD and provides them with a peer group who understand.
