The Filipino community in Happy Valley-Goose Bay is the subject of a new documentary being screened for the first time today at the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival.
“Becoming Labrador” is co-directed by three filmmakers – Tamara Segura, Fernando Rohan and Justin Simms – and produced by Annette Clarke.
Segura says it’s a different kind of documentary.
They worked closely with a few families. She calls it experimental, poetic and includes some animation.
Simms shot the film and says as a co-director it was a very co-operative experience.
He joked that he wishes he could say there was a lot of drama and infighting with three directors working on the same project, but they actually worked very well together.
